The perfect introduction to the region, for those arriving for the first time. Great sparkling-wine cellars, an underground wine museum, one of the region’s most surprising experiences, and a modern winery working with rare grape varieties. At day’s end, a toast among the vines as the light falls over the rows. You leave knowing what the Bairrada is, and already wanting to come back.

The sparkling route

The Bairrada is the capital of sparkling wine, and this afternoon is a tribute to it. Leading producers, some with over a hundred years of history, and the cellars where the bottles rest until they are just right. Along the way, a toast among the vines with regional cheeses and cured meats. And, at the end, a small bottle to take home and make the afternoon last a little longer.

The whole Bairrada in a single day, from the interior to the Atlantic. Old vines of one of Baga’s most legendary producers, the mystical Bussaco forest and, in Mealhada, what simply has to be: Bairrada-style suckling pig with crackling skin, with sparkling wine to go with it. In the afternoon, feet in the sand at Praia da Tocha and chilled sparkling wine in hand, watching the sun set over the sea. A day that feels like three.

Just for two

Our most romantic route, and the only one just for the couple. Aboard the 1954 Beetle, with a discreet driver, you have the whole afternoon to yourselves. A private visit to a boutique winery, with a tasting and a cheese board, a picnic among the vines at day’s end and the drive back in golden light. At the end, a bottle with a personalised label and a Polaroid of the two of you with the car, to keep.
